Eighth-trimester student Jared Ollis recently had an opportunity few others have had: he was able to designate a scholarship that will help other student veterans pursue their dreams of becoming a Palmer chiropractor.
Jared was recently named the recipient of the Foxworth Family Chiropractic Scholarship. This achievement-based scholarship recognizes students for their capacity to lead and serve, and their commitment to making an impact in their communities and the profession.
Jared was selected out of 400 candidates from chiropractic colleges across the country.
Originally from the upper peninsula of Michigan, Jared always knew he wanted to become a chiropractor and follow in the footsteps of his two older brothers and Palmer graduates, Jason Ollis, D.C. and Philip Ollis, D.C., as well as his brother-in-law, Ryan G. Vermeesch, D.C.
When Jared graduated from high school in 2010, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served on active duty as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division for the next four years. While on reserve duty, he earned his Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees before enrolling at Palmer College in 2018.
The Foxworth Family Chiropractic Scholarship is funded by ChiroHealthUSA in honor of company president Dr. Ray Foxworth’s parents, Drs. Betty Pace Mathews and Charles Vernon Mathews. The award includes a scholarship to the student, as well as $10,000 donation to the chiropractic college to be used for student scholarships.
Jared was then able to choose how the $10,000 would be designated within the College. He chose to create a scholarship for student veterans, and in doing so, honor his grandfather, the late Corporal Ivan L. Ollis, who proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. Thanks to Jared and ChiroHealthUSA, Palmer College will offer four new one-time scholarships, open to student veterans at any of Palmer’s three campuses.
