Matthew Skalski, D.C., DACBR, assistant clinical professor at Palmer’s West campus in San Jose, California, received five awards at the 102nd Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), held recently at McCormack Place in Chicago, Illinois.
Established in 1915, the RSNA is an international society of radiologists, medical physicists and other medical professionals with more than 54,000 members. The scientific assembly, held each year in Chicago since 1985, is the premier annual radiology forum in the world, and draws approximately 50,000 registrants, nearly half of whom are health-care professionals.
The 2016 Annual Meeting of the RSNA featured 667 technical exhibits; 1,733 scientific papers in 16 subspecialties; and 1,867 education exhibits as well as 896 scientific posters.
The RSNA awards committee presented 28 Magna Cum Laude awards, 67 Cum Laude awards, and 302 Certificate of Merit awards, of which Dr. Skalski received the following:
Magna Cum Laude: “Graphic Illustration for the Radiologist: An Introduction to Using Original Illustrations in Medical Education” (which was also invited for publication in the journal, Radiographics).
Cum Laude Award: “An Illustrated Guide to Intraspinal Cystic Lesions”
Cum Laude Award: “Beyond Valley Fever: Imaging of Musculoskeletal Disseminated Coccidioidomycosis”
Certificate of Merit: “A Guided Tour of the Anterior Knee: Challenges Posed by Normal and Variant Anatomy”
Certificate of Merit: MRI of Chondrosis and Cartilage Repair Surgeries
Another of Dr. Skalski’s presentations (“Diagnosis and Management of Carpal Trauma and Instability: An Illustrated Guide!”) was the second-most “liked” musculoskeletal exhibit at the conference, and among the top-five most-“liked” exhibits at the conference.
“I was very excited and felt honored to have my work acknowledged by such a respected group of reviewers at such a highly regarded and well-attended international conference,” said Dr. Skalski, who has earned other RSNA awards and received top 20 recognition for his exhibit at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists Annual Scientific Meeting in 2013.
In addition to his faculty position at Palmer’s West campus (where he teaches diagnostic-imaging lectures and labs, as well as labs associated with thoracic adjusting courses and also reviews radiography cases with students and interns), Dr. Skalski also: maintains a private radiology consultation service for doctors in practice; has been published in several radiology and clinical imaging publications; and utilizes his graphic design and photography skills to create high-quality illustrations for medical publications.
